QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Here are some common questions about Momentum Chiropractic.
How do I find the right Chiropractor for me?
The best way to find the chiropractor that’s right for you is to spend some time and effort in the beginning. Ask your relatives, friends, neighbors and co-workers whose opinions you trust. Ask them specifically what they like about their chiropractor. Ask about the chiropractor’s expertise, specialty, communication style, philosophy about health, and also about financial affordability.
Once you have narrowed your selection to a specific chiropractor, schedule an appointment. Tell the doctor as precisely as you can about your needs, your reason for wishing to see a chiropractor, and also about your long-term health goals. Remember that you are building a partnership with your chiropractor to facilitate your healing process.
When the doctor examines you, ask questions and try to determine if the doctor’s technique, style and personality suit you. You will usually know within the first few visits if this chiropractor is the one for you.
How do I prepare for my first visit?
Your chiropractor will ask about your health concerns and the main issue which brought you in the first place to the chiropractor. Try to be as specific as possible. Tell your doctor when your symptoms started, what they feel like, how they affect your life, and what makes the symptoms better and worse. The more descriptive your explanation, the more helpful it is.
Related questions which the DC may ask include your family history, dietary habits, other care you may have had (chiropractic, osteopathic, medical, etc.), your job, and other questions designed to help determine the nature of your illness and the best way to go about treating the problem.
What can I expect on my first visit?
The chiropractor will perform a physical examination, which may include x-rays, laboratory analysis and other diagnostic procedures. In addition, a careful spinal examination and analysis will be performed to detect any structural abnormalities that may be affecting or causing your condition. All of these elements are important components of your total health profile and essential in the evaluation of your problem.
Once the DC has identified the problem, he/she will begin care by performing adjustments or “manipulations.” Particular attention will be paid to that area of your spine where a spinal derangement or “subluxation” has been detected. The adjustment is usually given by hand or “activator” type instruments. The chiropractor will apply pressure to the areas of the spine that are out of alignment or that do not move properly within their normal range of motion.
Doctors of chiropractic use many sophisticated and varied techniques, and the specific procedure to be used will be determined and explained completely to you following a careful evaluation of your radiographs and physical findings. Make sure that the doctor explains the techniques and procedures adequately so that you understand the process.
Does an adjustment hurt?
Chiropractic treatments will usually produce relaxing results. In certain cases of recent trauma, such as whiplash, mild discomfort may be experienced due to the inflammation caused from the recent trauma. A patient may feel a brief sensation in the extremities immediately following an adjustment. This is due to sudden decompression of the affected nerve root.
Is Chiropractic safe?
The chiropractic process is a safe, efficient, non-invasive procedure. Due to its non-invasive nature, the body’s response is far more predictable than compared to its reactions to medications or surgical procedures. Because complications from chiropractic treatments are extremely rare, the chiropractic field maintains an excellent safety record. As a result, chiropractors’ malpractice premiums are much smaller than those for medical doctors.
How long will it take before I start to feel better?
Some patients will experience almost instant relief, while others will take several weeks due to the nature of the trauma or injury. Several factors directly affect the healing process including adequate sleep, a nutritious diet, proper posture, the avoidance of tobacco, alcohol or illicit drugs, and the maintenance of healthy lifestyle habits.
Many patients soon see sufficient signs of improvement that encourage them to complete the chiropractor’s recommended treatment plan.
